Guidance for Indigenous Collections and
Indigenous Data: Recommendations from Creative Commons and Local Contexts

Creative Commons and Local Contexts are jointly releasing the Guidance for Indigenous Collections and Indigenous Data. Both organizations share commitments to equitable knowledge sharing, proper attribution, and respect for diverse cultural and community protocols. The purpose of this Guidance is for Creative Commons and Local Contexts to align open licensing tools with Indigenous data sovereignty frameworks. This strengthens our support for communities, institutions, and users navigating knowledge care and stewardship—both historical and legacy collections and those coming into institutions into the future.
